At the last minute...
I decided to run Friday evening instead of going for the 7am run in Los Gatos Saturday morning. It was short as there wasn't much light left, but I had some fun with it. Went to the ST track (the all-weather track is much easier on my knees), did a mile in just over 10 minutes, walked half a lap, did another mile in just under 11 minutes, walked half a lap again, then did one lap in 2 minutes (would equal an 8 minute mile). As I said, it was kinda fun and I covered 2.5 miles in about 27 minutes. It's a low mileage week (only 12 miles so far), but I need to recover from almost 40 miles last week. I cannot believe how different my legs look as compared to 4 months ago! Current Mood: mellowCurrent Music: David Lanz | | Thursday, July 21st, 2005 | | 9:05 pm |
Update for the week
Well, I suppose if I'd been running more this week I'd have had more to say this week. Took Sunday off after Saturday's 14 mile trek, then made it only 2.4 miles on Monday and 2 miles on Tuesday. It has been SO hot this week - I just can't do it in 90 degree heat after working all day. I had a good run with my group this evening. I managed about 5 miles and did it in 53 minutes, which is a really good pace for me, especially since I'm still feeling the effects of Saturday (my legs and butt feel like lead after a few miles). And it was still pretty warm and humid - I still can't believe it rained here today! But I feel great now, almost 2 hours after finishing the run. Sunday is the Wharf-to-Wharf 10k race. Race. As if I am really racing! Everyone says it's loads of fun and I'm looking forward to it. Current Mood: contentCurrent Music: Coldplay | | Sunday, July 17th, 2005 | | 5:22 pm |
Saturday at Santa Cruz
Another first for me - a 14 mile run from Natural Bridges to past Twin Lakes and back. I have to tell you, my legs felt like lead the last mile or so and I had to walk about a quarter mile. But the rest was at a run. Okay, a jog. But it was great! The first 4 miles was a piece of cake, but I went really slow. I did jog up the hill at the log ride end of the Boardwalk! So, as of July 16 I'm at 14 miles and it blows me away. That's a half-marathon! Even if I do run at a banana slug's pace. I am going to hold at no more than 14 miles for a week or two and let this 44 year old body adjust. My right knee is swelling again (though not as much as the first time it happened) and I'm noticing some other issues that I think are related to the increase in mileage. Mile run this week (July 10 through 16) - 38 miles. Wow! Current Mood: happyCurrent Music: Train-Drops of Jupiter | | Wednesday, July 13th, 2005 | | 10:38 am |
Out earlier today
Ran 4 miles at the track. Another good run - it just felt good. It's already over 80 this morning. Yuk. Current Mood: cheerful | | Tuesday, July 12th, 2005 | | 7:07 am |
It's going to be so hot today...
So I went out early. Not early enough - gonna be late for work! Got 2.9 miles in, already feeling the heat (sun). Maybe I'll tack on a bit more when and if it cools off this evening. Current Mood: rushed | | Sunday, July 10th, 2005 | | 6:43 pm |
Not 8 to 10 miles today...
Twelve! I made it 12 miles on the Sawyer Camp run. I stopped at mile 5, considered turning around to make it 10 miles, but wanted to keep going. Let me get a bit "out there" - I spent Saturday afternoon and evening praying for it, visualizing it, feeling it. I went to bed believing I am a runner. So when I finished 5 miles and was at my turnaround point, I realized I didn't want to stop. Mile 6 was half walking - it's mostly all uphill. At 9.5 miles the sun really came out and it definitely got to me when I wasn't in the shade. But I made it. Slowly - it did take me 2 hours, 35 minutes. But less than a month ago, I hadn't even run 5 miles. Less than 4 months ago, I only managed to get a mile on a treadmill. I've been told that for me to be able to run 12 miles at this point is pretty incredible. I don't know if that is true or not, but hearing it makes me feel incredible. To the person who told me that (just in case you happen to see this) - thank you. You inspire me in more ways than you know. Finishing this 12 mile run today was one of the most amazing, awesome, empowering experiences of my entire life. I cannot even imagine what it will feel like to finish a marathon. I feel as though I can accomplish anything. One of these days, I will talk about "chafing". Ouch. Saturday update
I did run this morning - 4 miles, 45 minutes. I've decided it gets way too sticky running by the water when it's sunny. So I made it 29.1 miles this week. Not quite 30, but about as close as you can get. Tomorrow morning - 8 to 10 miles. I need a vacation. Current Mood: hopeful | | 7:51 am |
I'm off...
Okay, I almost didn't make it, but I changed my mind. I'm off to Campbell Park for a run. Maybe not 5 miles, but still a run. Please let it still be overcast... Current Mood: restlessCurrent Music: U2-Electrical Storm | | 12:27 am |
Dilemma
I wanted to run 30 miles this week, but realized the Team in Training run is on Sunday. That's the start of my next week. If I run 5 miles on Saturday (I ran 2 tonight and followed it up with an ice cream cone with my daughter!) then I'll make my 30 miles. But it will be a lot harder to make an 8 mile (or longer) run on Sunday. And we're leaving town for Sawyer Camp at 6 am - ouch. I am thinking it'll be a short run on Saturday and I'll quit worrying about the 30 mile week. Right knee is a bit swollen again - ice helps. Fortunately (yeah, right) I have plenty of other distractions that keep it from really bothering me. Training benefits - a tan and weight loss. I think my hips are actually getting smaller. Tonight's run
Did my regular Thursday evening run at Campbell Park with my buddy running group and made it 6 miles. I actually felt pretty good at the end, better than I expected, and I think I could have kept going. Total since Sunday - 23.1 miles. I learned a couple of people are also doing the Wharf-to-Wharf 10k run from Santa Cruz to Capitola on Sunday, July 24, so at least I'll have a running buddy or two. Team in Training run is this Sunday - 8 to 10 miles. I'll try to get a running photo taken and posted so that y'all can laugh at my red face! I need to get a water belt - these longer runs are taking their toll. Thanks to everyone who has donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society; my donations total $1,100 thus far! I also need to get more sleep, so I'm turning in. I am completely, totally wiped out. Current Mood: drainedCurrent Music: Alanis Morissette-Everything | | Tuesday, July 5th, 2005 | | 6:04 pm |
8 miles
I didn't wait until Saturday. Went to the track, felt better than expected and kept going. Okay, I did walk a bit a couple of times. But I made it 8 miles for the first time. My legs are sore and my right knee is swollen again (time for a naprosyn), but I made it. Total so far this week: 17.1 miles. And 4 days left to go 13 miles and make it a 30 mile week. Happy 4th of July
Well, I didn't make it as far as I would've liked on my morning run, but I did get 5.5 miles in. I have finally figured out that I do not like running in the sun! It was a slow run, between the sun, my swollen right knee, and sore leg muscles, but I'll take it. Did I mention I was up until 1 am, making potato salad and pie crust for the 4th of July block party? Too late! Since I mentioned it, the neighbors are gathering for fireworks tonight - here's my menu: barbequed tri-tip, corn on the cob, potato salad, fruit and a peach pie (yes, homemade!). There may even be a margarita or two served. I think I'll take Tuesday off from running! Have a fun 4th. A New Week
My weeks start on Sunday, so here goes. After thinking I must be completely out of my mind to even consider running a marathon after yesterday, I hit the street at 6:30 this morning for a quick run. I made it 3.6 miles in 37 minutes - basically a 10 minute mile pace. Laugh all you want - that's darned good for me!! My leg muscles ache and I'm icing my swollen right knee, but I feel great. So I've got 26.4 miles to go this week to make my goal of 30 miles. I checked my running log for June and the week of June 5 I ran 11.1 miles - I guess I haven't been doing so badly after all! Monday, July 4 I'm headed to the Los Gatos Creek Trail to work on that 6.5 mile trek again and see if I can't improve my time a bit. And I'll be there early this time. Thanks to Barb for her generous donation to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and encouragement! So I decided to start running...
In about March of this year I started running. If you know me, you can stop laughing now! I'm serious! A coworker talked me into signing up for the Wharf-to-Wharf race from Santa Cruz to Capitola, a 10k (6.2 miles) scheduled for July 24. I realized I'd better start figuring out how I was going to accomplish this feat and that lead me to the Nike Women's Marathon. Now I'm working with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training to run (ok, more like jog) the Nike Women's Marathon on October 23 in San Francisco. Since my dad passed away in March from a related illness, it just seemed like the thing to do. Am I nuts?! Yes - add stupid and stubborn as well. A marathon - that's 26.2 miles! Yikes!! I've made it as far as 6.5 miles - that's a quarter marathon! So here I am on July 2, wiped out after a 6.5 mile run in the sun, without water and with a running buddy who has been known to run 10k's with mile times under 6 minutes. What a sight - did I mention I'm stupid?! This week's totals: 26 miles (in a week, and I want to do that in a single morning?) Next week's goals: 30 miles total and an 8 mile run on Saturday, July 9 Current Mood: touchedCurrent Music: Fix You - Coldplay |
